wb 11th May
This week began with our long-anticipated trip to Kew Gardens, linked to our Geography learning about the Amazon rainforest. We explored the Temperate House, where we learnt about plants that grow in temperate climates, and the Palm House, where the tropical climate allowed us to discover fascinating rainforest plants. We were especially excited to find a cacao plant — the plant chocolate is made from! Despite a little rain, our spirits were not dampened, and the trip was a fantastic opportunity to consolidate our classroom learning.
Back at school, we followed up our experience by writing detailed recounts of the trip in English. Inspired by our journey into the world of nature, we also wrote persuasive letters to the Brazilian President, encouraging him to do more to protect the Amazon rainforest and suggesting ideas for how this could be achieved.
In Art, the children created their own Amazon rainforest scenes using paint, producing beautiful and vibrant creations full of colour and imagination.
In Science, we continued our nature-themed learning by exploring plants in our own climate and investigating the important role flowers play in the life cycle of a plant.
In RE, we explored different versions of the Ascension story and reflected on how the disciples might have felt witnessing such an amazing event. We expressed these thoughts and emotions by writing thoughtful letters from the disciples’ perspectives.
It has certainly been a wonderfully nature-themed week all round in Lower Juniors 2!
