Eton College, BBC 500 Words, Poetry Day and So Much More...
The children have had a different start to their days this week as we prepared to send each class to the Natural History Museum at Eton College, one class at a time. They began each day with maths, followed by RE or a topic lesson. Despite these changes to their routine, they have coped admirably, worked hard in maths, and continued their discussions about the Ten Commandments in RE. Our focus has been on what it means to "love thy neighbour" and the consequences of not caring for the vulnerable members of society.
In Science, our life cycles topic enabled us to look at the common garden frog and how it metamorphoses from a tadpole into an adult frog. We then explored the life cycle of the red-eyed tree frog in greater depth and compared the two species.
In History, our focus was on women and the suffrage movement between 1866 and 1929. It was fascinating to learn why women fought for the right to vote and the various methods they used to campaign and protest for their rights.
We all had a wonderful morning at Eton College, navigating our way around the animals in their collection while using our science knowledge from the past four weeks, as well as our prior learning, to classify animals into their different groups and sub-groups.
The children have also begun their BBC 500 Words stories. Their planning has been excellent, with exciting characters, imaginative settings, and creative ideas. They now just need to complete their stories at home. I am excited to see what fantastic authors we have in our midst!
For Poetry Day, we learned about a type of poem called a Kenning. In these poems, writers use descriptive words and phrases to describe a noun without directly telling the reader what they are writing about. We had great fun experimenting with this style, and the children produced some wonderful poems.
A great week, UJ3. Well done, everyone!
