Learning and loving on our journey with Jesus

Our Curriculum

Learning and loving on our journey with Jesus

With God at the centre of everything we do, we aim to nurture our children to become the best possible version of themselves and of whom God intends them to be. Our broad and balanced curriculum is underpinned by Gospel values, Catholic Social Teaching and permeated by our Catholic values of stewardship, teamwork, agape, and Respect (STAR). Our curriculum is designed to go beyond the statutory content and deliver experiences that take into consideration our children’s varied background and cultures, broaden their life experiences and equip them for the next stage of their lives.  We aim to create resilient, problem solving young people who have a lifelong love of learning.

Our curriculum is subject based emphasising the distinctive nature of each subject along with key concepts and requisite disciplinary skills. Within each subject we have ensured that learning is carefully sequenced with ideas introduced and revisited later in the child’s learning journey so facilitating firm connections and long-term memory retention. Where natural links exist between subjects, we have exploited these to make learning more meaningful and further strength memory retention.

Protected Characteristics at St. Mary’s

The Equality Act became law in 2010. It covers everyone in Britain and protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation.

The Equality Act protects people against discrimination because of the protected characteristics that we all have.

Under the Equality Act, there are nine protected characteristics:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Race - including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin
  • Religion or belief
  • Marriage or civil partnership
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation
  • Pregnancy and maternity

No form of discrimination is tolerated at St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School and our pupils show respect for those who share the protected characteristics.

We do not teach about all the protected characteristics in every year group. The curriculum is planned and delivered so that our pupils develop age appropriate knowledge and understanding during their time at St. Mary’s.

Phase yearly curriculum overviews can be found on the class pages
